Newly released video shows the moment fireworks were launched from a moving vehicle on a Florida highway over Fourth of July weekend, resulting in the passenger’s arrest.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) on Monday released video from an SJSO Air Unit that was patrolling on July 4 when the crew spotted what appeared to be “mortar-style” fireworks exploding in traffic lanes and the median of Interstate 95 as cars passed. The fireworks appeared to be coming from a moving vehicle that was hauling a boat.

The activity “quickly ignited a law enforcement response,” and patrol deputies soon located the vehicle. The occupants initially denied shooting the fireworks, at least “until they were informed that their bright idea had been caught on camera,” the sheriff’s office said.

The vehicle’s passenger, whose identity was not immediately released, was arrested and charged with shooting a deadly missile from a moving vehicle.

“We understand fireworks are a fun way to celebrate, but only when handled safely and responsibly,” the sheriff’s office said. “Only ignite fireworks from a hard surface, a safe distance from people and other objects.”
