An elderly Iowa man who fell down a ravine was rescued over the weekend after authorities used a drone to locate him, officials said.
The Story County Sheriff’s Office said an elderly man called 911 to report that he had fallen down a ravine near the Greenbelt Trail south of Story City. The man reported that he was unable to stand, and believed he may have broken ribs.
The Story City Police Department and the Story County Sheriff’s Office responded to help locate the man, while Story City First Responders, Mary Greeley Medical Center Paramedics, and the Story City Fire Department were dispatched for medical assistance.
Deputies deployed a drone to search the area, and an aerial video shared by the sheriff’s office shows the moment the man’s heat signature was spotted through dense tree cover. A switch to a visible color camera showed the man, wearing an orange jacket, lying on the ground near the waterway.
Deputies provided the man’s exact coordinates to rescue personnel. The man was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
