Dump Truck Strikes Florida Overpass, Shutting Down I-95
A Florida highway was shut down Monday night after a dump truck struck an overpass and was left teetering on its rear wheels, officials said.
Martin County Fire Rescue shared a Facebook post at around 11:30 p.m. Monday warning motorists that all lanes of southbound Interstate 95 were closed in the area of Citrus Boulevard after a dump truck struck the overpass, threatening its structural integrity.
Crews responded to the crash site just after 10:30 p.m. and closed Citrus Boulevard was closed in both directions under the overpass.
Photos shared by the fire department show the bed of the dump truck caught on the overpass, such that it stood nearly vertical on its rear. Because the dump body was stuck, the trailer remained tipped in the air. It appears blocks were wedged around the truck’s rear tires — the only ones in contact with the road — to keep it stable until it could be safely cleared.
A civil engineer was called to the scene to assess the safety of the bridge. Fire officials said the road would remain closed until the overpass is officially cleared for travel, and warned motorists to avoid the area.
