Chevy Chase’s ‘Huge Ego’ Was on ‘Full Display’ While Filming Doc: ‘He’s Only Made Things Worse’ (Exclusive)

Chevy Chase is notoriously difficult to work with — and his new documentary, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, does nothing to dispel those rumors.

In one scene, director Marina Zenovich tells the 82-year-old actor that she wants to figure him out, which he insists won’t be easy for her. When the Emmy-winning filmmaker asks why, he fires back with a smile, “You’re not bright enough. How’s that?”

The clip went viral.

“People have always accused Chevy of having a real mean streak and it was very evident in the documentary,” a source tells the National Enquirer. “Instead of rehabbing his image, doing this film has only made things worse. It has given all the stories about how awful behavior over the years even more credibility.”

Chase famously clashed with his Saturday Night Live castmates. Terry Sweeney, the show’s first openly gay cast member, called him “a monster” in the 2002 book Live From New York after the comedian pitched a sketch in which he gets AIDS.

He also butted heads with the cast and crew of Community. They would cheer when Chase would leave for the day — and in 2012, he left the NBC sitcom for good following an N-word scandal involving costar Yvette Nicole Brown.

“Chevy has been on this salvation tour in recent years, trying to prove he’s changed, and it’s true that he’s mellowed out an awful lot,” says the source. “But he still had a huge ego and that was on full display in his documentary.”

Now, “there are other people threatening to come forward to skewer him,” the source reveals. “Chevy should have just let sleeping dogs lie. He’s only made things much worse.”
