Catherine O’Hara, the Canadian actress known for her iconic portrayal of matriarch Moira Rose in the Pop TV sitcom Schitt’s Creek, has died. She was 71.
The Emmy Award-winning actress’ manager confirmed the news of her death to People, but provided no further details.
TMZ was the first to report that O’Hara died Friday, January 30, according to two sources with direct knowledge.
Her cause of death is unknown.
Born March 4, 1954, O’Hara grew up in Toronto, Ontario, before beginning a career in sketch comedy.

In 2020, she won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of matriarch Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, in which she starred alongside Dan Levy, Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy. In the years before her death, O’Hara became synonymous with the role, with many praising her comedic chops and scene-stealing onscreen presence.
O’Hara was also known for the roles of Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice as well as Kate McCallister in 1990’s Home Alone and its 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
She had a long list of film and television credits to her name. Some of her other credits include After Hours, Heartburn and more.
O’Hara was married to production designer Bo Welch, whom she met on the set of Beetlejuice, in 1992. They share two sons, Matthew and Luke.
