Authorities are pushing back against disturbing new information that was reported in the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie.

On Tuesday, February 3, NewsNation correspondent Ashleigh Banfield reported that Savannah’s brother-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, has been named as a prime suspect in Nancy’s disappearance. Cioni is married to Savannah’s sister, Annie.

“I have spoken with an impeccable law enforcement source who has informed me with his knowledge of the investigation of some extraordinarily serious pieces of information about this crime scene,” Banfield said during an episode of her show, Drop Dead Serious. “I can tell you that Mrs. Guthrie had cameras, plural, at this home, and they were smashed.”

Banfield stated that Annie and Tommaso were the last people to see Nancy, 84, on Saturday, February 1.

“They have towed Annie Guthrie’s car,” Banfield continued. “There is some connection to Annie Guthrie’s car and Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law. My law enforcement sources tell me that Tommaso Cioni is the prime suspect in this case. Again, my law enforcement source tells me that Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law, married to Annie Guthrie, Savannah’s sister, is maybe, maybe a prime suspect. At the very least, let me tamp that down.”

However, according to TMZ, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department pushed back against Banfield’s report, telling the outlet on Wednesday, February 4, “We have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie. We are also awaiting additional forensic results.”

“We are not confirming the car being seized, we are unsure where that reporter is getting that information,” they told the outlet.

Nancy was reported missing on Sunday, February 1. She was last seen at her home in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, on Saturday night. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told People that a friend alerted a family member when Nancy didn’t show up for church on Sunday morning. When the family member arrived at Nancy’s home, they called 911.

Nanos described Nancy’s home as a “crime scene” and said that the state of her house was “seriously concerning.”

Savannah, 54, has yet to return to Today amid her mom’s disappearance. However, she did release a statement that her cohost Craig Melvin read on air on Monday, February 2.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the statement read. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
