Five boaters were rescued in Louisiana Sunday night after their boat crashed into an unknown object and began sinking, authorities said.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said it received a 911 call at around 8:35 p.m. Sunday reporting a 23-foot boat taking on water near the Manchac Lighthouse on Lake Pontchartrain with three women and two men on board. The sheriff’s office Search and Rescue team located the sinking vessel at around 9:16 p.m.

When rescuers arrived, the “rapidly rising water” was around the passengers’ ankles. The women were first transferred to the SJSO search and rescue vessel. By the time the men were removed from the vessel at around 9:31 p.m., the water reached their knees.

“Shortly after” the boaters were safely removed, the vessel capsized and began to fully submerge, the sheriff’s office said.

All five people were transferred from the search and rescue boat to a relative’s boat. No injuries were reported.
