A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest after an arson fire caused $100,000 in damages at a popular playground in Vancouver, Wash.

The City of Vancouver on Monday announced that police and fire investigators had determined an early-morning fire that destroyed the play structure at Oakbrook Park was caused by arson.

Fire crews responded to the park on NE 99th Avenue at around 1:24 a.m. Monday and arrived to find the large, composite play structure engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported, but the structure was deemed a total loss, amounting to approximately $100,000 in damages.

After reviewing evidence at the scene and interviewing witnesses, investigators determined the fire was intentionally set.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Arson Alarm Foundation is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s).

“Arson is not a victimless crime,” said Heidi Scarpelli, Fire Marshal. “This playground served families and children throughout our community, and its loss affects everyone. We’re asking neighbors to help us hold whoever is responsible accountable.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fire-Arson Investigation Team at 360-798-6428 at any time 24/7. Tips can be submitted anonymously.

City officials said the play structure will be rebuilt or assessed for replacement with support from the City Parks Department.
