1 Dead After Car Crashes Into Yacht Harbor In California

One person is dead after initially being rescued from a submerged vehicle that crashed into a California harbor Tuesday, officials said.

The Southern Marin Fire District said crews responded to reports of a submerged vehicle at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor on Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle had entered the water with multiple occupants inside.

Crews arrived to find one occupant of the vehicle had managed to escape on their own, while the second occupant remained trapped inside under about 10 feet of water. Responders commenced dive operations and brought the victim to the dock, where lifesaving measures were initiated.

The fire department said that victim was transported to a local hospital. The other occupant was evaluated at the scene.

KRON reported that the Sausalito Police Department confirmed at around 8 p.m. that the hospitalized victim had died. The identity of the victim was being withheld pending family notification.

Photos shared by the fire department show crews using a crane to lift what appears to be a white Mercedes out of the water.

“Reminder: When driving near waterfront areas, use extra caution — especially in low-visibility or unfamiliar conditions,” the fire department said.
