A woman’s tearful TikTok video about an unexpected dental bill has struck a nerve online, drawing attention to a frustrating reality many Americans face with their dental insurance.

In the video, the woman named Hali explains that after visiting the dentist to treat her receding gums, she learned her insurance would cover just $787 of the total cost, leaving her with a $14,000 bill.

“What the [expletive],” Hali says in the viral video, wiping away tears. “$800 from my insurance, like, what the [expletive] am I even paying for?”

She adds that she’s expected to pay $14,000 just so “my teeth don’t fall out of my head.”

Based on those figures, her insurance covered roughly 5% of the total $14,800 cost.

According to WhereistheBuzz, the treatment the woman has described may include a procedure called gum grafting — a surgical procedure that moves tissue, often taken from the roof of the mouth, to areas where the gums have receded.

The video’s comments section quickly filled with similar frustrations from viewers.

“Dental insurance isn’t real. It’s only a discount for preventative care,” one person wrote.

Another shared an even steeper bill: “Girl, that’s nothing. I went to Aspen Dental and they quoted me 27K for a full mouth. Told them to [Expletive] off and went to Puerto Vallarta Mexico and got the same exact procedure for 6K, mind you 2K of that is travel and hotel expenses. Dental in the US is a [expletive] scam!”

Others echoed the sentiment. “Dental insurance has to be a scam. It covers NOTHING,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “Dental insurance is comedy. It covers nothing but a couple of cleanings a year. As worthless as wheel damage insurance.”

One person summed up the broader frustration simply: “This country is so profoundly broken.”

Another recalled a similarly high estimate, writing, “I was quoted $5k for ONE root canal. Sick of U.S. dental.” A final comment captured the mood of many: “It’s sad that having teeth is a luxury.”

It turns out Hali’s experience isn’t just a matter of bad luck — it points to a much bigger structural issue with how dental insurance works. Even approved dental insurance claims still come with strict limits. Delta Dental notes that most plans cap annual coverage between $1,000 and $2,000, leaving patients to cover the rest.

The National Association of Dental Plans similarly found that most network and indemnity plans max out between $1,000 and $1,500, according to Spirit Dental.

Unlike medical insurance, dental plans don’t include a yearly limit on how much a patient can be required to pay out of pocket. As per the site, once a plan’s benefit maximum is reached, the patient is responsible for the full remaining balance, with no ceiling in place.
