Woman Arrested for Smuggling Two Suitcases Stuffed With Over $690K Worth of Cannabis From Thailand
A British woman was arrested at Heathrow Airport for smuggling two large suitcases’ worth of cannabis into the country from a trip to Bangkok, Thailand.
Amy Jayne Durban, 45, was arrested by Border Force officers on July 6 at the airport and pleaded guilty to smuggling Class B drugs into the UK during a court appearance on August 6. According to the National Crime Agency, she was traveling with 51.2kg (about 113 pounds) of cannabis that she stuffed into two suitcases. The NCA estimates the street value of her drugs was £512,000 (about $690,931).
It’s unclear how authorities discovered Durban’s plan or if they were aware of her activities before she landed. However, the arrest comes after she posted a cryptic status on Facebook.
“On her way home to cut the grass if ya know what I mean,” the post read. “no eta so you won’t know I’m about to hit your lawn.”
According to the NCA, demand for cannabis in the UK has led to an explosion of drug couriers trying to smuggle it into the country. Criminals are reportedly approaching people on social media and promising them a “free” holiday and some spending money in exchange for agreeing to smuggle drugs back home, where another criminal courier will move them on.
However, the agency did not specifically say that Durban was swept up in one of these offers.
The agency said 142 smugglers were caught in the UK in 2023, a number that shot up 465 percent the following year to 801 and again in 2025 to 976. Durban’s arrest comes after the NCA announced a partnership with Thailand to crack down on this kind of smuggling. Those caught can face a fine of up to £17,680 ($23,848) that will turn into a lengthy prison sentence if not paid.
“People should understand that these crime groups use profits from cannabis smuggling to fund the trafficking of other drugs too. All of those drugs fuel wider crime in our communities and have a toxic effect on people’s lives,” said Mark Abbott, NCA senior investigating officer in a statement announcing Durban’s arrest and guilty plea.
