Sydney Sweeney Addresses Being Called ‘MAGA Barbie,’ Says She Scrolls ‘Through Hate of Me’ Online

Sydney Sweeney is opening up about what the world thinks of her.

In a Thursday, January 29, interview with Cosmopolitan, the Euphoria actress, 28, got candid about the online hate she’s endured since being thrust into the spotlight.

Sweeney said that she feels people create “their own narratives” about her “that serve their purposes, their headlines, their clickbait.”

When asked about being branded “MAGA Barbie” by some people online, even though she does not talk politics (despite numerous reports that she is a registered Republican as of 2024), she replied, “I’ve never been here to talk about politics.”

“I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of,” she said. “And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”

As to why she feels no need to address the label head on, the Christy star admitted, “I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.’ There’s no winning.”

“I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am,” she said. “I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.”

Without getting into politics, Sweeney said she wants people to know that she’s “always led with love,” adding: “I’ve always believed that love is love in every single form. You should be kind to whoever you meet.”

However, she doesn’t feel she is treated that way by people online, telling the publication that she scrolls “through hate of me” on all of her social media accounts.

She said that it can be “difficult when people have opinions about you that aren’t true, because you want them to know who you are.”

Asked if she would ever begin talking about politics with her fanbase, Sweeney said. “No. I’m not a political person. I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics.”

“That’s not an area I’ve ever even imagined getting into. It’s not why I became who I am,” she added. “I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”
