Serial killerDavid Berkowitz, known as the Son of Sam, is speaking out from behind bars after purposely skipping a recent parole hearing.
In an interview withThe New York Post from the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, New York, the 72-year-old serial killer declared that he has found Jesus and believes he will one day go to heaven.
“My home is in heaven, not in the Bronx,” Berkowitz wrote in an email sent to the outlet earlier this week.
Berkowitz, who terrorized New York City in the 1970s by killing six people, said he found Jesus while serving his prison sentence. He has been incarcerated for 48 years.
According to the outlet, Berkowitz skipped a parole hearing earlier this month because he believes he is “already free” and said the “only place” he’s interested in going “is to heaven to be with the Lord.”
This month’s parole hearing would have been his 13th parole bid since 2002, but Berkotwitz is no longer seeking release.
“I opted not to attend. Right now, I have other things to do, which I feel are more meaningful,” he said.
Decades after his crimes, the Son of Sam now preaches the gospel to fellow inmates and oversees a prison congregation, which he described as his “work in prison.”
“These men need guidance and encouragement,” he claimed. “I am an elder, and this is my calling.”
His remarks infuriated surviving victim Robert Violante, now 68. “That takes some pair of balls, to say the least,” Violante told the Post on Tuesday, May 19.
Violante, who lost most of his vision after being shot in the head, added he “sincerely” doubts Berkowitz will go to heaven.
“He is lucky is not already in hell,” he added.
Violante survived the shooting while on a date with Stacy Moskowitz, who was killed.
At the time of the murders, Berkowitz claimed he was inspired by a “demonic dog” belonging to his neighbor, Sam Carr, according to the Post.
His victims were killed across New York City, including in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, and were said to be complete strangers. After murdering Alexander Esau, 20, and Valentina Suriana, 18, Berkowitz left a note at the crime scene referring to himself as a “monster.”
“I am the Son of Sam,” he wrote. “I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game tasty meat.”
Berkowitz, a former postal worker in the Bronx, was ultimately sentenced to 547 years in prison. He’s since told parole boards that he converted to evangelical Christianity while incarcerated.
