Comedian Kathy Griffin has never been one to mince words, and she stayed true to herself when recently announcing a big health update. “Happy Monday!” the reality TV star wrote on Instagram on April 7. “I had a hysterectomy on Friday.”

But after a quick explanation of her procedure (which includes the removal of a woman’s fallopian tubes and ovaries), Griffin, 64, couldn’t help but show her more comical side.

“Pre-cancerous blah blah blah,” she wrote in her announcement. “I’m going to do a Patreon post later about my private ‘nurse’ (who possibly got her scrubs online).”

Her post’s caption, however, did reveal that her medical journey had affected her. “Not to be an a**hole, but how do I NOT have a reality show to capture all of this???” she quipped. “I mean, you can’t write it. It’s too real. 😂😭🥺.”

Griffin — who was “cancelled” in 2017 for a Trump bit that some considered to have crossed a line — couldn’t stay away from politics in her post. Referring to her nurse, she wrote, “I sent her home because she also thinks that ‘tariffs’ are ‘terrorists’ so she kept saying things like, ‘I don’t like Donald Trump anymore because the price of eggs is going up and now he’s adding terrorists!’” She accented her point with three emojis: laughing, red heart and prayer hands.

Fans flooded the post’s comments with well wishes. “I am so sorry Kathy!” wrote one. “I hope you found another nurse with wit and caring to check in on you.” Griffin answered that her original nurse would reply, “You’re fiiiiiiiine” when asked by the My Life on the D-List star if she wanted to look at her stitches or take her blood pressure.

“Take it easy, Kathy! No hoppin’ around,” advised another fan, to whom Griffin admitted, “I am the worst at just laying in bed and convalescing even though those are the doctors orders.” She added that watching the news — including the ongoing stock market decline — was having a negative effect on her health: “I’m watching the markets so my [blood pressure] is up.”

Others shared that they, too, had had a hysterectomy. Griffin asked one how long recovery was and was told approximately six weeks.

Griffin has a long history with medical scares. She overdosed on prescription Xanax and Vicodin in 2020, successfully battled Stage 1 lung cancer (despite not being a smoker) in 2021, and had vocal cord surgery in 2023. She has talked openly about all three.
