The seating chart for President Trump‘s family at his State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 24, had a deeper meaning, according to Rob Shuter.

In the Friday, February 27 edition of Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack, a source shared that First Lady Melania Trump sat closest to the aisle because that is “the power seat.”

“It’s where cameras linger,” the source explained. “Power trickles down from that position.”

Melania, 55, wanted son Barron Trump right next to her, but after that, the commander-in-chief’s daughter Ivanka wanted to be next in line, Shuter reported.

“It sounds silly and petty, but this means a lot to Ivanka,” another source shared. “She did not want to be seated after her brothers or pushed to the end. This was not an accident.”

Next to Ivanka, 44, was brother Eric, then brother Donald Jr., and, lastly, her half-sister, Tiffany.

“These optics are carefully planned,” the source noted. “In this family, placement equals status.”

During the 79-year-old’s first term, Ivanka served as his advisor, but since he took office a second time, she has opted to stay out of the administration.

In a January 2025 appearance on the Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast, Ivanka explained her reasoning.

“The main reason I am not going back to serve now is, I know the cost, and it’s a price that I’m not willing to make my kids bear,” she remarked. “It’s very easy to make a decision when it aligns around your core values and my highest most core value is family.”

“I love policy and impact. I hate politics. And unfortunately, the two are not separable,” she added. “There is a darkness to that world that I don’t really want to welcome into mine.”
