With Easter on the horizon, many parents are preparing for the annual sugar rush that often comes with colorful baskets packed with candy, but according to registered dietitian and mom of three Erin Palinski-Wade, theres a smarter way to approach this spring tradition — one that keeps the fun, without overloading on sugar.

“Its not about taking the fun out of Easter — its about putting more thought into what goes in the basket,” says Palinski-Wade, a nationally recognized diabetes expert and author of “The 2-Day Diabetes Diet” and “Belly Fat Diet for Dummies.”

Rather than eliminating candy altogether, Palinski-Wade encourages parents to focus on balance. A few of your childs favorite treats can still make the cut — just mix them with more nutritious options and fun, non-edible surprises.

“You can absolutely include your childs favorite sweets — just balance them out with a few nourishing snacks and playful non-food fillers like bubbles, puzzles, or Easter-themed games for well-rounded basket that both parents & kids will feel good about,” she says.

Looking to reduce sugar without sacrificing excitement? Palinski-Wade suggests a few clever swaps.

“Try freeze-dried fruit instead of gummies, or go for dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher) to keep the flavor while cutting the sugar and adding antioxidants,” she says. She also encourages parents to use the holiday as a teaching moment.

“Use Easter as a fun intro to healthy habits — think edible food markers, veggie cutters, or mini tongs to make fruits and veggies part of the celebration,” she says. To keep things festive, Palinski-Wade recommends thinking outside the candy aisle.

“The basket doesnt need to be all sugar — kids love surprises like sidewalk chalk, coloring kits, or even a fun water bottle they can decorate themselves,” she says.

With a few thoughtful choices, Easter baskets can still be packed with joy — without the sugar crash.
