The Department of Homeland Security sparked controversy on Monday, August 24, with a cryptic post shared to X.
The post in question featured a photograph of an expressionless PresidentDonald Trump holding an umbrella and looking into the distance. A message was written over the photo which read, “DID YOU REMAIN LOYAL?”
The message was posted in response to political commentator Christian Heiens reacting to headlines about the Trump administration taking action on a variety of separate issues. “It’s just a series of generational wins after another,” Heiens wrote on X.
The headlines Heiens reacted to were shared by Insider Wire, which posted about the Supreme Court allowing Trump’s mail-in ballot restrictions to take effect. Another involved Trump’s confirmation that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 1,328 immigrants in Maryland and Virginia during the first two weeks of August.
A third headline shared by Insider Wire covered Trump’s confirmation that ICE will investigate Rep. Ilhan Omar over immigration fraud allegations.

A number of X users took issue with the DHS’ post, which many interpreted as a message directed at people who oppose Trump.
“Fixed it,” one user reacted on social media, while reposting the image of Trump with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein next to him.
“If you’re loyal to a pedophile you’re not a patriot,” another message in response to the DHS read.
“I’m loyal to my country and countrymen. Trump is NOT. Go [expletive] yourself,” a third post read.
A fourth critic called the DHS message “genuinely deranged.”
“DHS is not supposed to operate as a personal fan account or run meme-format loyalty tests for one politician. Support the enforcement policies if you want. But this is not normal institutional government communication,” another X user posted.
