Tensions are rising at Good Morning America — with recent layoffs, lower ratings, and insiders speculating about internal unrest and fears over job security.

Early last month, 200 staffers — including GMA3 executive producer Catherine McKenzie — were shown the door, and control of the show shifted to the production team that oversees the first two hours of the program.

“Everybody’s got their heads on a swivel — including the stars of the show,” said a source, despite network assurances that the layoffs are now complete.

GMA has dominated the morning-show ratings for nearly a decade but has been losing ground to rival Today in recent months, with the gap between them closing in January to just 16,000 viewers.

Trouble began when its family-friendly reputation took a massive hit in 2022 when anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes got the boot after their extramarital affair became public — despite their claims they were estranged from their spouses.

“They lost viewers and credibility from that,” said a source. “Ratings are up a bit, but the bosses feel they need to shake things up.”

Insiders say that would be fine with beleaguered anchor George Stephanopoulos, whose credibility took a hit after the network reached a settlement with Donald Trump and he was forced to apologize for saying the prez was “found liable for rape” — rather than sexual abuse — in a lawsuit brought by journalist E. Jean Carroll.

“He feels they didn’t have his back and now he can’t shake the public humiliation,” says a source.

“He’d be thrilled if another opportunity came along.”

Making things more uneasey, recent reports say George and fellow anchors Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan balked at taking a bigger role in the troubled third hour of the show, which network sources deny.

An ABC spokesperson told The ENQUIRER in a statement, “The third hour is a valued part of the GMA franchise. Robin, George and Michael have been on before and they will continue to be featured.”
