A Houston funeral home operator hired to handle a man’s burial is now behind bars, accused of forging his will and stealing his $2.2 million estate.

Houston Chronicle reported on Wednesday, June 22, that Unique Green, 47, was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, and charged with theft of more than $300,000 and four counts of forgery. The jail records listed him under the name Michael James Green, and it remains unclear how Green identifies.

NBC affiliate Click2Houston reported that Green ran an unlicensed funeral home called A Community Funeral Home — which the family of 78-year-old Lawrence Gammon hired to handle his services after his death in June 2025. Weeks later, Green allegedly submitted a forged will claiming to be Gammon’s spouse and sole heir, then stole nearly $2.2 million from his bank accounts along with three vehicles from his home, as per the Houston Chronicle.

Investigators say Green also opened an account titled “Estate of Lawrence E Gammon” using a falsified death certificate, and had been impersonating an entirely separate, legitimate Houston funeral business, using its phone number and email to operate undetected.

Police raided the funeral home in November 2025, recovering boxes of cremated remains.

According to a complaint obtained by KTRK, several families said they waited up to two years to receive their loved ones’ remains after hiring Green. The complaint also alleged that bodies were transported in U-Haul vehicles.

A judge set bond at $800,000 on Wednesday, July 22.
