Driver in Maine Shot and Killed by ICE Agents Was a 26-Year-Old Colombian Immigrant

New details are being revealed about the man who was fatally shot by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Biddeford, Maine, on the morning of Monday, July 13.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the man was a 26-year-old Colombian immigrant, according to the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine.

“He was a member of our community, a neighbor, and a human being whose life was cut tragically short,” the two nonprofit organizations shared. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone now grieving this unimaginable loss.”

Presente! confirmed the victim was authorized to work in the U.S. and had been issued a Social Security number, per the outlet.

The Maine Speaker of the House, Ryan Fecteau, shared Monday on his Instagram story that “A person was killed,” and “ICE was involved.”

“State Police, the Department of Public Safety and the Office of the Attorney General are now on scene investigating,” Fecteau’s statement read. “Our community is shaken by this incident. We are heartbroken that someone lost their life. We deserve answers about why lethal force was used and why an operation was being carried out in our streets.”

“I also know that our immigrant neighbors are particularly impacted by this violence. I want them to know that their elected leaders, their neighbors, and their state is here for them,” he penned. “These are details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates as they are relayed to me.”

While details of the shooting remain unclear, The New York Times reported, “Social media video showed agents surrounding a still body at an intersection in Biddeford, next to a car with bullet holes in the windshield, and local police officers arriving at the scene.”
