Bryant Gumbel Rushed to Hospital in New York City After Sudden Health Scare: Report

TV veteran Bryant Gumbel remains hospitalized in New York after suffering what sources have described as a “medical emergency.”

According to TMZ, the 76-year-old Today alum was taken from his Manhattan home around 9 p.m. on Monday, October 20. First responders were seen wheeling the longtime broadcaster out on a gurney before he was transported for treatment. Gumbel remains under doctors’ care as of press time.

A relative told the outlet that the journalist was “OK” but declined to reveal further details about his condition or what triggered the emergency.

Gumbel became a household name during his 15-year run on NBC’s Today, where he helped define morning television in the 1980s and ’90s. After leaving the network in 1997, he went on to co-anchor CBS’s The Early Show and later fronted the acclaimed HBO series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, earning multiple Emmy Awards for its hard-hitting reporting.

The TV icon has faced health battles before: In 2009, Gumbel revealed he had been diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor and part of his lung. At the time, he said the disease had been caught early and his prognosis was good.

A year later, he assured fans he was on the mend and told People in December 2010, “I’m still doing well… doctors tell me I’m free and clear.”

Late last year, Gumbel suffered a tragic personal loss when his older brother and fellow broadcaster Greg Gumbel died at the age of 78.
