On Monday, February 10th, a 16-year-old boy was rescued from a 50-foot-deep mine shaft by the Placer County Technical Rescue Team of CAL FIRE/Placer County Fire Department. The teen and his friends had rappelled 40–50 feet down a vertical shaft inside a horizontal mine tunnel using household ropes, but the rope snapped during their ascent, causing the boy to fall 30 feet to the bottom. Rescuers deployed a complex rope system, rappelled into the shaft, and safely extracted the teen, who was transported to a local trauma center for treatment.
