Motorists in Washington state are being warned about an increase in scammers selling fake gold alongside highways.

The Washington State Patrol on Wednesday issued the warning after receiving “numerous” reports of people selling fake gold across the state. The agency said that in District 5 alone, which covers the southwestern part of the state, there were a total of 61 such reports in all of 2024, compared to 57 between Jan. 1 and April 17 this year.

WSP said the scammers post up along freeways and ramps in their attempts to sell the fake gold, and in some cases have even “stepped out into traffic, flagging drivers to pull over.”

“Besides being illegal, these situations are also unsafe,” the agency said. “If you encounter this type of situation, it’s important to safely remove yourself and not stop to talk to them.”

WSP is asking anyone who encounters a gold scammer to call 911 as soon as possible and provide a location and description of the scammers and their vehicles.

“We are actively investigating these reports as they come in,” WSP said. “We ask the public to be mindful of potential scams and stay vigilant when traveling on the roadways.”
