A pair of law enforcement officers and a motorist were a “split second away from tragedy” when an SUV ran off the highway and crashed into two vehicles overnight Sunday.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said a VSO sergeant and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper were at the scene of a car vs. deer collision on Interstate 95 in the early hours of Monday morning when an SUV ran off the road.

Video shared by the sheriff’s office shows the both officers running from the side of the road as the SUV crashes into the VSO patrol vehicle and the vehicle that struck the deer. The SUV spins back onto the highway before coming to a rest.

The video shows the VSO sergeant checking on the motorist, who was still in his vehicle when the SUV struck.

“I just think I got whiplash, but oh sh**, my car is like fu**ing trash now,” the motorist says. “Sorry I’m overreacting.”

“No, I mean, my life flashed before my damn eyes right now,” the sergeant says.

Fire rescue responded to the scene, and the driver of the SUV appeared conscious and alert.

“I’m telling you, like if, if those rumble strips weren’t there, I would have been dead,” the sergeant says.

“PLEASE stay alert for emergency lights and move over for first responders, service vehicles and disabled vehicles on the side of the road,” the sheriff’s office said. “This was a split second away from tragedy.”
