The horrific crime took place the night before Easter 55 years ago in McAllen, Texas.

The 25-year-old former Miss South Texas had gone to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where Feit, 27, heard her confession.
Five days later, her body was found facedown in a canal.
Police zeroed in on the priest after discovering his Kodak slide photo viewer near the body.

Feit was given a lie detector test — and failed! Even more damning, he’d been arrested just 24 days before the murder and accused of attacking another woman at a nearby church!
Incredibly, Feit was never arrested. Instead, he was whisked away to a far off monastery in Ava, Mo.
The case remained cold and Feit retired to start a family in Scottsdale, Ariz. But Irene’s dogged kin refused to give up the hunt for her killer.

Noemi tracked down former priest Joseph O’Brien, who revealed Feit had confessed the crime to him. Feit also admitted he was transferred because the Church considered him “too dangerous,” said Joseph.
Later, monk Dale Tacheny, Feit’s ex-spiritual advisor, said the priest told him he’d raped and suffocated Irene.
After Irene’s kin presented the new evidence, Feit was indicted Feb. 9 and arrested. Said Lynda: “It was about protecting the church.”
