Authorities in Texas say a jail riot sparked by a “routine” contraband shakedown on Thursday was contained after law enforcement deployed gas, and the instigators will face charges.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said 44 inmates were involved in the standoff that began at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Liberty County Jail. During a “routine” contraband shakedown, inmates in two dorm units barricaded doors and broke windows.

Jail staff was forced to evacuate to a secure hallway to wait for backup from the sheriff’s office and local police departments. Law enforcement “quickly” regained control of one dorm, but deputies were forced to use “chemical agents” in the second dorm before they could make entry and subdue the inmates.

The sheriff’s office said no law enforcement personnel were injured in the riot. One of the “main instigators” sustained unspecified injuries and was medically evaluated.

Sheriff Bobby Rader said some inmates will have to be relocated while repairs are made.

“If you get arrested in Liberty County, you will be treated fairly and respectfully, and we expect the same in return. This behavior is unacceptable, and those responsible will face charges,” Lt. John Bennett said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing, but that “several” inmates are expected to face charges.
