Authorities in Colorado are still searching for suspects who faked a seizure at a pet store in order to steal two puppies, but one of the puppies has been returned by a good Samaritan who bought it from a street vendor before recognizing it on a news story.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office on Monday released surveillance video that shows the theft of two bulldog puppies priced at $4,299 each from the Perfect Pets pet store at 6840 S. University Boulevard on Feb. 24.
Three men entered the store a few minutes apart and pretended to look around. One of the men then fell to the ground, faking a seizure, and multiple employees rushed to his aid. While distracted, a second suspect grabbed two puppies from their pen. Two employees, both women, spot the thief and try to stop him, but fall to the ground as he escapes with the puppies and another man.
The men left with the puppies in a gold Cadillac Escalade that pulled up to the front of the store, the sheriff’s office said.
The man who allegedly faked the seizure, 37-year-old Timothy Davis, was arrested and the scene and charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, theft, and drug possession.
In an update later Monday, the sheriff’s office said a good Samaritan returned one of the puppies after seeing a news story about the theft. She told investigators that she purchased the puppy from a street vendor in north Denver for $1,500. But when she recognized the puppy in the news story, she immediately contacted Perfect Pets.
“Perfect Pets is grateful for being reunited with the dog and plans to give her a reward,” the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies are still searching for the other two suspects who entered the store, and a third suspect who was driving the Cadillac.
The first suspect is described as a Black male who was wearing a large black coat and sweatpants. The second suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male with brown hair who was wearing a blue and white beanie-style hat. There was no physical description for the third suspect, who was driving the Cadillac.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
