Semi-Truck Explodes And Burns In Northwest Indiana, Prompting Hazmat Response

An Indiana highway was closed in both directions Monday after a semi-truck exploded and burned, police said.

Sgt. Glen Fifield of the Indiana State Police announced on social media at around 1:30 p.m. Monday that all lanes of Interstate 65 north and south were closed for a hazardous materials response after a truck exploded in the southbound lanes near Roselawn, about 65 miles southeast of Chicago, Ill. Traffic was being diverted at exits 230 and 240.

The driver of the truck was not injured. Videos shared by Fifield show the semi truck fully engulfed in powerful flames, with fireballs seeming to jet away from the wreck as if explosions were still ongoing.

In another video, a first responder can be heard saying the truck was “loaded with cans.” Another pop can be heard before someone says “they’re still exploding.”

Fifield warned cleanup would continue for “an indeterminate amount of time” — at least into the night — due to the road being “significantly damaged.”

Officials did not immediately release information on the type of hazardous materials involved.
