After major renovations, the Salt Lake Temple will host a public open house from April to October 2027.
President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has invited people from around the world to take part in a unique open house celebration at the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, after renovations have been completed in 2027.
“On February 14, 1853, a groundbreaking ceremony in Salt Lake City began a 40-year journey of faith and sacrifice, culminating in the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893,” said Nelson, who turned 100 years old in September 2024. The global faith leader announced the upcoming reopening on Feb. 14, exactly 172 years after the original groundbreaking.
The massive, spired structure has been undergoing a “comprehensive” renovation, which is nearing completion. Currently, much of the Temple Square remains open to the public, and visitors are able to see construction progress from the Main Street Plaza and Conference Center.
Buildings surrounding Temple Square, including the Conference Center, Tabernacle, Church History Museum, Church History Library, FamilySearch Library and the newly renovated Main Street and Church Office Building plazas, also remain open.
“As houses of the Lord now dot the earth, I invite you to cherish your time and service at the temples closest to you as we prepare for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple in 2027,” Nelson said.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has nearly 18 million members worldwide. The unique open house event from April to October 2027 will offer visitors the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of a key landmark in the faith’s narrative.
Additional details about the open house event will be shared as April 2027 draws closer.
