PresidentDonald Trump will have a gulf and a lake if he gets his way, as he just threatened to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America.’
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump, 80, shared via Truth Social on Tuesday, August 25. “Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Of course, Lake Ontario is a shared body of water between the United States and Canada and, similar to his demand to rename the Gulf of Mexico in 2025, Trump only has the power to rename the lake for official U.S. federal government use. Outside of that, Trump has no say when it comes to how the lake is labeled for international bodies.
Nevertheless, the president’s remarks come amid rising tensions between the United States and its neighbor to the north after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.

“America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday. “The U.S.A. will always be far bigger, richer, and stronger than Canada. Without the United States, Canada couldn’t survive…They will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States — Their key to survival.”
He added, “WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!
Ontario Premier Doug Ford shot back at the Trump administration, threatening to cut off electricity to 1.5 million American homes and businesses and block access to critical mineral exports.
