Police in New Jersey say an African gray parrot worth thousands of dollars has been returned to a pet store and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of the man who stole it.

The Saddle Brook Police Department said that at around 4 p.m. on Jan. 23, a man entered Birds by Joe 2 in Saddle Brook and asked to view the African gray parrot. The store owner placed the bird in a cage and showed it to the man, who grabbed the cage and fled.

The parrot was valued at approximately $7,000, police said. Investigators looked at surveillance videos and still images of the suspect, who was identified as 24-year-old Onyx Calderon of Paterson.

The parrot was located in Paterson and police said Monday that it was safely returned to Birds by Joe 2.

Police are now asking for the public’s assistance locating Calderon. Police Chief John Zotollo Jr. is asking anyone with information about Calderon’s whereabouts to contact the Saddle Brook Police Department at 201-843-7000 24 hours a day, or the Detective Bureau at 201-587-2927.
