A blind Florida man was rescued from drowning after falling into a canal earlier this month, and the police officers who saved him were recognized this week with certificates of merit.

The Hialeah Police Department said officers responded to a report of a man seen falling face-first into a road then stumbling into a canal in the area of West 5th Avenue and West 26th Street shortly after 9 p.m. on May 2. Sgt. Richard Aguero and Officer Kevin Coloma arrived to find the 65-year-old man, who is legally blind, floating face-down in the canal.

Body-worn camera video shared by police shows Coloma jumping into the canal “without hesitation” to pull the man to shore. The man was unconscious, not breathing, and had no pulse.

Aguera and Coloma immediately began performing CPR in an effort to resuscitate the man.

“There he goes, come on,” Aguero says. “He’s coming back! He has a pulse.”

Police said the man survived and was transported to a hospital “thanks to the heroic actions” of the officers.

At the Hialeah City Council on Tuesday, Coloma and Aguero were each presented with certificates of merit for their actions.
