When a minivan burst into flames on a California highway last week, a police officer and sheriff’s captain worked together to rescue a disabled woman who was unable to escape the fire on her own.

The San Diego Police Department on Monday said Motor Officer Alex Chiappone was traveling northbound on Interstate 15 on April 17 when he encountered a minivan “fully engulfed in flames” on the shoulder, with a disabled woman trapped inside.

Chiappone immediately approached the burning vehicle “without waiting for backup or protective gear,” police said. With assistance from San Diego County Sheriffs Captain John Malan, Chiappone entered the smoke-filled van and helped pull the woman out through the sliding door “just moments before flames overtook the interior.”

The woman was evaluated by paramedics, who didn’t find a single burn or injury.

“Officer Chiappones response reflects the highest standards of service and professionalism we expect from those who wear the SDPD badge,” the police department said. “We also extend our thanks to Captain Malan for his decisive action and partnership in saving a life.”
