Getting promoted to a leadership role is often a milestone in ones career, but for many, it comes without the tools or training needed to thrive.

Thats the problem veteran executive Noel Massie aims to solve in his upcoming book, “Congrats! Youve Been Promoted: An Essential Guide for Helping New Leaders and Their Teams Succeed” (Mission Driven Press, June 2025).

Drawing on a six-decade career at UPS, where he began as a part-time employee and eventually oversaw 200,000 workers as Vice President of U.S. Delivery Operations, Massie distills decades of frontline leadership experience into a practical guide designed to help new managers avoid common pitfalls and succeed in their new roles.

Structured as a mentor-in-a-book, “Congrats! Youve Been Promoted” combines anecdotes, actionable exercises, and research-backed insights. The book explores key areas such as establishing trust, giving constructive feedback, and aligning expectations between leaders and teams. Massie introduces tools like the B.E.S.T. Principle, aimed at improving communication, and the 4×5 Method, designed to help leaders evaluate situations from multiple perspectives.

Massie wrote the book for those who find themselves suddenly responsible for others without clear guidance. Its especially timely given that many organizations continue to promote from within without offering structured leadership training.

In addition to his UPS career, Massie has been deeply involved in nonprofit leadership and mentorship. He currently serves on several boards, including the Annenberg Foundation and the Los Angeles Urban League, and remains active in mentoring early-career professionals.

With “Congrats! Youve Been Promoted,” Massie offers a clear and compassionate framework for leadership — rooted not in management theory but in lived experience. The book is positioned as a resource for both newly minted leaders and the organizations looking to support them.
