A Los Angeles Police Department officer was injured in an “explosion” at an apartment building Wednesday night while responding to a report of a trespasser in the building.

The LAPD said officers responded to a report of a trespass suspect inside an apartment on the 400 block of 6th Street downtown at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. When officers entered the apartment, “there was an explosion,” police said.

The officers exited the apartment and the suspect barricaded himself inside, police said. An LAPD spokesperson confirmed to KTLA that one officer was injured and transported to a hospital in unknown condition.

The LAPD Bomb Squad and SWAT team were called to the scene, and some nearby residents were evacuated. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody at around 12:30 a.m.

Police did not identify the suspect, or indicate charges that may be forthcoming. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
