Police in Los Angeles shot and killed a man who allegedly fired a gun at a police helicopter Sunday night.

The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon on the 6400 block of Reseda Boulevard shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

“An LAPD airship was overhead and reported that the suspect appeared to fire his handgun at the airship,” police said. Preliminary investigation indicates the helicopter was not struck by gunfire.

Arriving officers saw the suspect run into an apartment complex near the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard. The suspect ran to the rear alley of the apartment complex, where officers made contact and the shooting occurred.

Police said the suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody. Paramedics responded and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

Police said no officers or other community members were injured. The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene and will be booked as evidence, police said.

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
