An investigation is underway after a hiker was found dead Sunday at Utah’s Zion National Park, officials said.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said a caller reported a “possible fall of a hiker” shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday on the Canyon Overlook Trail in Zion National Park.

Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue was the first to arrive at the scene, and pronounced the hiker dead at around 7:40 a.m. Zion National Park Rangers and Zion Technical Search and Rescue also responded to assist in the recovery of the body.

The hiker’s remains were transported to the Washington County Medical Examiner for further examination. The hiker was identified only as a 37-year-old man.

Park officials said the Canyon Overlook Trail was temporarily closed for recovery operations.

The sheriff’s office said detectives are conducting an “active investigation” into the hiker’s death.
