An elderly hiker from Germany died after falling Tuesday in Utah’s Arches National Park, officials said.

The National Park Service said rangers responded to a report that a man had fallen while hiking on the “primitive section” of the Windows Loop Trail in Arches National Park on Tuesday, May 6.

Bystanders had begun CPR before rangers arrived, along with Grand County Sheriffs Department, Grand County EMS, and Classic Air Medical. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, however, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The hiker was identified as 77-year-old Rudolf Peters from Haltern am See in Germany.

The incident is being investigated by the National Park Service and the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

“Visitors are reminded that uneven surfaces, changeable weather, and preexisting health conditions are all important factors to consider when choosing a safe and enjoyable hike,” park officials said.
