A Georgia Walmart employee is in custody after allegedly shooting two co-workers and another person early Friday.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a reported shooting at the Walmart store on Salem Road at around 1:30 a.m. Friday. The store was closed for business at the time, with only employees inside.

Preliminary investigation revealed the suspect, an employee, allegedly left the building to retrieve a firearm from his car. He returned to the store and fatally shot one person described by investigators as an “acquaintance,” reportedly a coworker. As the suspect left the store, he shot another co-worker, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The suspect left Walmart and allegedly forced entry into a nearby residence on Emerson Trail, fatally shooting another “acquaintance,” the sheriff’s office said.

“This was not an active shooter situation,” the sheriff’s office said. “The suspect specifically targeted individuals they knew.”

The suspect was apprehended in South Carolina and taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the suspect or the victims.

The investigation is ongoing.
