A Georgia motorist allegedly fell asleep at the wheel before crashing into a sheriff deputy’s patrol vehicle last week.

The Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was patrolling in the area of Highway 96, traveling toward Jeffersonville, shortly after 11 p.m. on April 16 when a GMC Yukon exited Westbound Interstate 16 at the Exit 24 ramp, ran a stop sign, and struck the deputy’s Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show the wrecked vehicles. Investigators say the male driver of the Yukon had fallen asleep at the wheel just before the crash.

The deputy was unharmed thanks to the deployment of the airbag, while the driver of the Yukon and a female passenger were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office did not say whether the motorist would face charges for the collision, but warned other drivers to pull off the roadway if they are feeling drowsy, or have a licensed passenger take over driving.

“Drowsy driving is very serious and can lead to impaired judgment and increased risk of crashing, as in this case,” the sheriff’s office said. “It is comparable to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, there were 633 deaths from drowsy driving related crashes in 2023. That is 633 too many!”

The sheriff’s office urged anyone who sees a driver falling asleep at the wheel to call 911.
