With artificial intelligence (AI) prompting mass layoffs across tech, media, retail, and manufacturing, Gen Z workers are increasingly turning to unions for job protection and advocacy, according to a new survey.

The findings from the 2025 LaborStrong Perceptions and Priorities of Labor Survey, commissioned by MagnaCare, highlight a growing desire for stability through collective voice among younger employees.

According to the World Economic Forum, 41% of companies worldwide expect to reduce their workforces over the next five years as a result of AI adoption.

The survey reveals concern from Gen Z, who see unions as crucial in navigating the transformation brought by automation and remote work.

Over half of respondents see AI and automation as key workplace issues that unions must address. Furthermore, 77% of those ages 18–28 believe union workplaces are more favorable for employees. Gen Z and Millennials prioritize work-life balance, AI oversight, and hybrid work policies above traditional concerns like wages and safety.

“The role of unions has always been to protect workers, but in 2025, protection means adapting to new workforce challenges,” said Joe Morrone, Vice President of Labor Relations and Business Development at MagnaCare. “Modern issues like AI and automation are transforming jobs, and unions must lead the charge to ensure these advancements create more opportunities. Younger employees see this shift happening and look to unions to shape the future of work, setting standards that keep the workforce strong and competitive.”

The survey highlights a significant cultural shift as younger workers look to unions to ensure a balanced future work environment.
