Gavin Newsom‘s office has delivered a sarcastic response to speculation that Nicki Minaj could become PresidentDonald Trump‘s next White House press secretary following a suggestion from a senior administration official.
“We can only pray,” the California Governor’s office wrote in an X post on Monday, October 26, in response to the rumors, seemingly reigniting a feud between the Democratic politician and the rapper.
The speculation began on Sunday, October 25, when White House communications director Steven Cheung shared a video of himself interviewing Minaj, 43, aboard Air Force One.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!” Cheung wrote on X, tagging the singer.

In the video, Minaj praised Trump’s economic policies and work ethic while answering questions about the president’s leadership. “He outworks people who are half his age,” she said, defending Trump’s busy campaign schedule ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
The exchange prompted speculation about whether the “Super Bass” singer could be considered for the position, although no formal appointment or job offer has been announced.
The suggestion follows a shake-up in the White House press office after Katie Zacharia left the press secretary role earlier this month following a five-day tenure.
One person who appeared less than enthusiastic about Minaj potentially taking the job was Newsom, who has previously clashed with the rapper after she repeatedly criticized the California governor, 59, and called him “Newscum,” a nickname used by Trump.
Per The New York Post, Minaj said of Newsom during a January 2026 event promoting Trump Accounts, “He does not want to do anything credible with his time or life.”
She later claimed that the governor had ignored her attempts to contact him following swatting incidents at her Beverly Hills home in 2022 and 2023.
“He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,” she told Time.
During the event, she pledged her continued loyalty to the president, as seen in the video published by Fox News.
“President Trump, it is an honor to stand with you every single time,” Minaj told the crowd. “And I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again.”
Trump, who introduced Minaj as the “queen of rap,” praised her in return, calling her a “very, very special person.”
Meanwhile, White House adviser Alex Bruesewitz encouraged fans to weigh in on the possibility of Minaj joining the administration. “Hey Barbz, what do we think about this idea??” he wrote on X on Sunday, October 25.
Despite the online speculation, it remains unclear whether the White House is seriously considering Minaj for the position.
