A Florida teenager was arrested Monday for allegedly bringing a loaded firearm to his high school, officials said.

At around 8:25 a.m. Monday, an administrator at Leto High School in Tampa activated a Centegix alert after “noticing a suspicious bulge” between a student’s arm and ribcage, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

An HCSO School Resource Deputy made contact with the student, identified as 16-year-old Alonzo Bridges, and allegedly found in his possession a loaded handgun with 15 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Bridges did not provide information on how he obtained the firearm.

I can’t stress this enough: bringing a gun to school is not only dangerous, it’s unacceptable. One bad decision could have changed lives forever today. Thankfully, the school staff and our deputy acted quickly to stop a potential tragedy,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “This reckless behavior will not be tolerated, and we will ensure that anyone who endangers our schools is held accountable.”

Bridges was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and minor in possession of a firearm.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
