A Florida sheriff’s office this week released an unusual recruitment video aimed at parents with adult children who have “failed to launch” and remain in their parents’ home as “squatters.”

“Parents, is your adult child failed to launch? Are they 30 years old and still living comfortably in your home, taking up your spare bedroom with no immediate plans to find a place of their own? Are they freeloading or not contributing to the bills while enjoying the riches of your life?” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey asks. “Equally concerning, do you have an 18-year-old that is just weeks away from graduating with no plans to attend college, join the military, or even get a job?”

Ivey suggests parents just send their kids to the sheriff’s office website to fill out an application.

“I know what you’re thinking: ‘I can’t get them motivated to even get up before noon, so how on Earth would they ever get a job at the most professional law enforcement agency in the country?’ Mom and Dad, you leave that to me,” he says.

Ivey suggests “the ability to buy their own Playstation or virtual headset” will make them “super excited” about having a job. Even better than buying a Playstation, Ivey says, is the ability to play real-life “video games” for the sheriff’s office.

“Does your adult kid like playing virtual reality games? Well here at the sheriff’s office we don’t only have video control screens we also have reality TV before its actually reality TV,” Ivey says over footage of a car chase.

“We have giant computer screens where our telecommunicators get to play ‘Grand Theft Auto’ almost every single night while talking on their headsets with other gamers who are out on the road,” he says over footage of what appear to be emergency dispatchers.

“Maybe your kid enjoys spending all day at home with the dog and cat. Well send them to me and they can actually get paid to spend all day with dogs and pets at our animal care center,” Ivey says over footage of a K-9 training facility.

“I’m willing to bet that no matter what your home squatter is into, we have a career waiting for them,” he says.

“Folks, this is the Space Coast, where we launch everything, so why should your kid be any different?” Ivey says. “Launch them off the sofa and into their career.”
