A firefighter in North Carolina was lowered into a storm drain over the weekend to rescue a dog that was trapped between 10 and 15 feet below ground.

The Raleigh Professional Firefighters Association said crews responded to a report of a dog trapped in a storm drain on Laurel Glen Drive shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday. Engine 26 arrived on the scene and requested technical support to reach the dog.

Photos and a video show crews setting up a tripod rope system over the open storm drain before lowering a firefighter into the hole. When the dog emerges safely, it appears uninjured.

“Thanks to a collaborative effort between RFD and Animal Control, the dog and its owner were successfully reunited,” fire officials said. “A very happy ending to this situation for all involved.”
