A fan was critically injured at the Pirates–Cubs game at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park Wednesday when he fell from the stands over the outfield wall and onto the playing field in the seventh inning.

The fan fell from the right-field stands above the Clemente Wall, which stands 21 feet tall, and landed on the track around the field. IT appeared another fan, who may have been acquainted with the victim, jumped over a lower section of wall to help the victim.

EMS, police team trainers and stadium staff responded immediately. Videos shared on social media show the man being transported off the field on a stretcher. He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.

The fall happened in the bottom of the seventh inning just after the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double to bring the Pirates to 4–3. The game was delayed several minutes while the victim was removed from the field.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” the Pirates said in a statement.

Police were seen in the stands looking around the area where the victim fell. Pittsburgh Public Safety said in a statement that Pittsburgh Police Violent Crime Unit (VCU) detectives are investigating the cause of the fall.
