An elderly Seattle man was hospitalized in serious condition on Sunday after driving off a parking platform and crashing onto an apartment patio below, police said.

The Seattle Police Department said officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday to a report that a vehicle had fallen onto a patio on the 800 block of First Avenue North. They arrived to find a 77-year-old man injured and trapped inside the vehicle.

Photos shared by the police department show the vehicle upside down on a patio, with broken glass and what appears to be a mangled railing.

Police said the vehicle had “gone over a cement parking bumper, through a metal railing, and dropped approximately 12 feet, landing upside down.”

The Seattle Fire Department extricated the man, who was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
