It took nearly an hour to rescue an elderly driver who became trapped in his vehicle after crashing into a Washington shoe store on Sunday, officials said.

The Everett Fire Department and Everett Police Department responded to a report that a car crashed into a building on the 1900 block of Broadway in Everett at around 3 p.m. Sunday.

According to the fire department, the driver was traveling northbound on Broadway when he crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a light pole, then went through the south wall of Althea’s Footwear. The store was closed at the time of the accident.

The driver, a man in his mid-80s, was trapped inside his vehicle. Firefighters used specialized equipment to stabilize the building and used the Jaws of Life to remove portions of the car so they could reach the driver. After about 50 minutes, the driver was extricated from the vehicle.

The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Everett Public Works sent a structural engineer to assess the damaged building. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
