A New York driver crashed into a Chinese restaurant late Monday, almost exactly a year after a similar accident at the same location, officials said.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe northbound on Broadway in the Farmingdale area of Long Island shortly after 11 p.m. Monday when her vehicle left the road. The Hyundai struck a parked 2017 Ford Mustang occupied by a 30-year-old man and an unoccupied 2022 Volkswagen Jetta before crashing into the Great Wall Chinese restaurant.
The Bethpage Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident at a strip mall on Boundary Avenue. Photos and video shared by the fire department show the partially crushed Hyundai engulfed in flames just in front of the restaurant.
The driver of the Hyundai and the man inside the Mustang were transported to hospitals for evaluation and treatment, but the extent of their injuries was not specified. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was “quickly” extinguished, but the fire department said the fire did have “minor” extension into the building.
“Ironically in January 2024 we were alerted for a similar type of incident at the same location,” the fire department said.
In that case, an allegedly drunken driver in a Mercedes struck an unoccupied Toyota, and the force of the impact sent the Toyota partially into the restaurant itself. The Mercedes driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Monday’s accident remains under investigation.
