U.S. Customs and Border Protection disrupted a “cheeky” smuggling attempt over the weekend, seizing methamphetamine hidden between the buttocks of a U.S. citizen at the southern border.

CBP officers at the Ysleta international crossing in El Paso, Texas, encountered a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen arriving as a pedestrian from Mexico shortly after 4 a.m. on March 30. Following a short interview, the man was selected for a secondary examination.

A CBP canine alerted to the scent of narcotics on the man, and a pat-down revealed two packages “concealed between the man’s buttocks.” The contents of the packages tested positive for methamphetamine.

CBP officers seized the packages, which weighed a total of 0.32 pounds. The man was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents to face charges of importation of controlled substance.

“The keen observational skills of a CBP officer resulted in this seizure being made,” CBP Ysleta Port Director Arnie Gomez said in a statement. “Body carriers are a challenge however our mix of officer expertise, canine support, and tools and technology all assist us in identifying and stopping these types of smuggling attempts.”
